Fanvue Taxes, 1099-K and VAT for Creators
Fanvue tax for creators, explained: who pays, the W-9 and W-8BEN tax interview, the current 1099-K thresholds, and how VAT works on your payouts.
Yes, Fanvue creators pay tax: as of July 2024, Fanvue said creators pay the taxes applicable in their home country and it withholds none. Before payouts, every creator confirms their tax status: a W-9 for US creators, a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E otherwise. As of July 2025, VAT could apply to payouts for VAT-registered creators without changing what fans pay.
Tax on your Fanvue earnings is yours to handle, while Fanvue's tax interview collects the details it needs before payouts.
๐01. Do Fanvue creators pay tax?
Yes, Fanvue creators pay tax: as of July 2024, Fanvue's help centre said creators who make money through Fanvue must pay the taxes applicable in their home country. The same article said Fanvue does not withhold any taxes on a creator's behalf, and that earnings are paid out upfront into your available balance.
Tax rules differ from country to country. If you're unsure how much you should pay, Fanvue recommends an independent financial advisor or accountant. This post explains what Fanvue asks for; it isn't tax advice.
๐02. Which Fanvue tax form do you need: W-9 or W-8BEN?
Fanvue now collects tax information through a short tax interview during onboarding, according to its August 2026 tax forms article. Every creator who requests payouts must confirm their tax status first, and your answers decide which form you're guided to.
US creators complete a W-9, which Fanvue says is generally for US citizens and other US persons for tax purposes. Non-US creators complete a W-8BEN if they're paid personally, as a sole trader or as a freelancer. A W-8BEN-E is for when a business they've set up, such as an LLC or corporation, is the one being paid.
Fanvue is a UK company, so why the US tax questions? The article says Fanvue processes creator payments through Fanvue LLC, a US-registered company, and US tax law requires any US entity that processes payments to collect tax information and report earnings to the IRS. It says this applies wherever you're based.
Picked the wrong form? Select "Edit my tax status" and complete the interview again. The interview is done separately for each Fanvue account you have.
Enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your verification ID. If you don't know your Tax Identification Number, its name and format vary by country, so Fanvue points you to your country's tax authority or a qualified tax adviser. Fanvue says never to enter a made-up number or someone else's.
Don't leave it too long. Creators who haven't completed their tax information can't request payouts, and there's a grace period, flagged by an in-platform reminder, before payouts pause. After submitting, you can email yourself a PDF copy, and request another later from Tax settings by selecting "Send to my email".
๐03. Will you get a 1099-K from Fanvue?
You'll get a 1099-K from Fanvue if you're a US-based creator and your gross earnings meet the IRS reporting thresholds. As of Fanvue's August 2026 article, those are $20,000 in gross payments and 200 or more transactions, from the 2025 tax year onward. It says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (2025) set them permanently and repealed a planned reduction to $600.
A 1099-K isn't a bill. Fanvue describes it as a record of the total payments you received through a platform during the year, which you or your accountant use when filing. It arrives by January 31 of the following year, so a 2026 form would come by January 31, 2027.
Expect its number to be bigger than what reached your bank. The 1099-K reports gross amounts before Fanvue's commission, fees, refunds and chargebacks come off, and Fanvue calls that normal. For context, its About page lists a standard split where creators keep 80% and Fanvue takes a 20% commission.
Not US-based? Fanvue says the 1099-K process doesn't apply if you don't earn income from US sources or aren't a US tax resident, although you may still be asked for a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E. Your local tax obligations depend on the laws in your country.
๐04. Does VAT apply to your Fanvue earnings?
As of July 2025, Fanvue's creator VAT article said whether VAT applies to you depends on your location, your earnings and whether you've registered for VAT. On location, it said VAT applies to your payouts if you're based in a VAT-registered country, at a rate that depends on the country where you're registered.
The article treats your monthly payout invoice as your sales invoice. If you're VAT-registered and have added and verified your VAT number, the number appears on every payout invoice, along with the VAT amount. If you aren't registered, the invoice states "VAT not applicable". It pointed to Settings โ Tax for adding the number.
Your fans' price doesn't move either way. Fanvue said your VAT registration doesn't affect what fans pay, because it already applies the correct VAT at checkout. Its fan-side VAT article added that the creator receives the price net of VAT, meaning the price without VAT.
Forgot to add your VAT number? A July 2025 Fanvue article said to add it to your account now. VAT isn't added to payouts you took before adding the number. You'll need to account for that VAT and pay it yourself, because Fanvue can't currently pay missed VAT.
Fanvue framed this around UK (HMRC) rules and said VAT varies by country of residence. It suggested an accountant or tax advisor for the calculations.
๐05. FreeVues never accesses your payments
FreeVues is a free directory of Fanvue creators, and it never accesses a creator's messages, fans or payments, or posts. Fans never pay on FreeVues either: subscribing and paying happen on your own Fanvue page.
There's no charge to be listed and no end date. One tap links your account, you give the go-ahead on a Fanvue screen, and a card built from your public Fanvue profile appears in under a minute.

๐06. Keep your payouts moving
Finish Fanvue's tax interview before you need a payout, keep your VAT number up to date if you're registered, and expect any 1099-K to show more than you were paid. For anything about what you personally owe, speak to a qualified tax professional in your country.
Quick answers
๐ฌDoes Fanvue withhold tax from creator earnings?
Not as of July 2024. Fanvue's help centre said it does not withhold any taxes on a creator's behalf, that earnings are paid out upfront, and that creators pay the taxes applicable in their home country. It recommends an independent financial advisor or accountant.
๐ฌWhy does my 1099-K show more than I was paid?
Fanvue says a 1099-K reports gross amounts before its commission, fees, refunds and chargebacks are deducted, so it will be higher than your payouts. It calls this normal and recommends speaking to a tax advisor about your own situation.
๐ฌDo non-US creators need a W-8BEN on Fanvue?
Yes, or a W-8BEN-E. Fanvue's August 2026 article says non-US creators paid as individuals, sole traders or freelancers complete a W-8BEN, and a business entity being paid completes a W-8BEN-E. Your answers in Fanvue's tax interview decide which one you get.
๐ฌWhat if I forgot to add my VAT number on Fanvue?
As of July 2025, Fanvue said to add it straight away. VAT isn't added to payouts taken before the number was added, so you account for that VAT and pay it yourself. Fanvue framed this around UK (HMRC) rules, said VAT varies by country, and suggested an accountant or tax advisor.
๐ฌDo I have to complete Fanvue's tax interview if I earn very little?
Yes. Fanvue's August 2026 article says every creator must confirm their tax status before requesting payouts, even below their country's tax threshold. That rule is separate from the threshold that decides whether a US creator receives a 1099-K.
